The new national standard for energy efficiency of smart thermostats has been fully implemented, ushering in a new round of industry consolidation.

Effective January 1, 2025, the new national standard “Energy Efficiency Limit Values and Energy Efficiency Grades for Smart Thermostats” will be officially implemented, categorizing thermostats into three energy efficiency grades—Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3. Under this standard, Grade 1 products must achieve temperature-control accuracy within ±1.5°C and standby power consumption of no more than 1 watt; products that fail to meet these requirements will be prohibited from being manufactured or sold. As a result of the combined impact of multiple policy measures, technologically outdated conventional thermostat products are accelerating their exit from the market. The market share of bimetallic-strip thermostats, which previously dominated the mid- and low-end segments, has plummeted from 45% to 12%, while smart thermostat solutions centered on NTC thermistors have rapidly become the market mainstream, with penetration in household appliances now exceeding 78%. By 2025, the temperature-control accuracy of smart thermostats has stabilized at ±0.8°C, significantly surpassing the new national standard’s requirement of ±1.5°C, signaling that smart thermostat technology is rapidly advancing toward greater precision and higher energy efficiency.
